I am a former NICU mom. My daughter was born at 31+6 weeks gestation, which is 2 months early. As sad as it can be to see preemies and how desperately they fight for their lives, I love meeting preemies who are released from the hospital. That moment when your tiny little fragile baby is cleared to come home is the happiest moment in the world. I was able to photograph these two cuties who were, like my daughter, born 2 months early. They had a long NICU stay but were finally able to come home. When they came to my studio they were 3 months old but 1 month adjusted. If you're not familiar with those terms it can be a little confusing. When a baby is born premature (usually before full term) they go by their gestational age. These two were born at 31 weeks gestation. So when they turned one week old their adjusted age was 32 weeks gestation. 2 weeks old, 33 weeks gestation. Why do they go by gestation age? Because premature babies aren't completely developed as a full term baby. At 34 weeks gestation your baby learns the suck and swallow reflex which helps them drink from a bottle. Each gestation has a new milestone that some parents don't truly get excited about, us NICU moms do! It's one step closer to going home. When your premature baby reaches 39 weeks gestation that means the next week is their due date. Preemature babies don't start the medically termed one day old or one month old until AFTER they pass their due date. That's what is called adjusted age. But in reality the baby is 3 months old. That's why I said these twins were 3 months old, one month adjusted. Anyway, AJ and Ariah were a blast. They were so tall they didn't fit in my baskets but slept so well on the posing bag! I'm happy with how their session turned out. I hope they come back when they're one for a fun cake smash session!
